Bagged Spinach Tainted with E.coli
September 2006
If you have a fresh bag of spinach in your fridge, get rid of it! The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that eight states reported 50 cases of E.coli bacteria, one ending in death, and the only connection between the cases is bagged spinach.
Because of the uncertainty over the origin and how it was distributed, the warning is nationwide and includes anybody who purchased bagged spinach. Health officials have not yet narrowed it down to a specific growing region, grower, brand or supplier.
E. coli causes diarrhea, but in the young and elderly the bacteria could lead to a form of kidney failure that has the potential to be fatal. Those who have consumed raw packaged spinach and became sick should consult their doctors immediately, according to the FDA.
