Jury Finds Prempro to Blame for Breast Cancer

January 2007

A Philadelphia jury found Wyeth, the manufacturer of the hormone-replacement therapy Prempro, responsible for a 60-year-old Arkansas woman’s breast cancer. Wyeth was ordered to pay $1.5 million in compensatory damages to the plaintiff and her husband.

Seven out of eight jurors agreed that Wyeth failed to provide proper warnings about Prempro’s cancer risk. The drug is used to treat menopause symptoms. The jury will also decide if Wyeth should pay punitive damages, in addition to compensatory damages, to the couple.

Wyeth is facing about 5,000 pending lawsuits involving their hormone-replacement drug Prempro.
