Stimulants Get Stronger Warning

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered strong warnings to be put on the labels of stimulants used to treat attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity. The labels warn about their use in children and adults with heart problems, and to make doctors aware that one in a thousand children may experience hallucinations.

The new warnings indicate the danger of giving the stimulants to children with structural heart problems, most of which go undetected. They will also warn of sudden death and strokes in adults taking the usual doses. The new warnings will be put on Ritalin, Adderall and Concerta.

The decision for the stronger warnings comes after several incidences of children suddenly dying while taking the drugs.
