Jury Links Prempro to Woman’s Breast Cancer

October 2006

A Philadelphia jury found that the hormone replacement therapy (HRT) drug Prempro was the cause of a woman’s breast cancer. The next phase of the trial will decide if Wyeth, Prempro’s maker, failed to properly warn about the drug’s dangers.

The jury awarded the woman, Jennie Nelson, of Dayton, Ohio $1 million in punitive damages and her husband $500,000 in compensatory damages. Determined in the second phase of the trial, the compensatory damages awarded will only be paid if the jury finds that the company failed to adequately warn of the drug’s risks.

After a study showed that long-term use of the drug in combination with the estrogen resulted in a 26% higher risk of breast cancer in women ages 50 to 79, Wyeth immediately changed the label to reflect this risk.

The lawsuit says that Wyeth was negligent in how they manufactured and marketed Prempro. Wyeth has 5,000 lawsuits against their HRT drug Prempro.
