Plavix’s Safety Questionable

Taking Plavix in addition to aspirin to prevent a first heart attack? You could be wasting your time. A study, soon to be published in The New England Journal of Medicine, found Plavix offered no benefit over low-dose aspirin treatment, and caused dangerous internal bleeding.

The trial studied 15,000 Plavix users who were either at risk for a heart attack or stroke and those who previously had a stroke, heart attack, or blocked artery in the leg.

The study found:

• The drug greatly increased the risk of internal bleeding in those patients trying to prevent a heart attack or stroke.
• Plavix offered a small benefit, about a 1% reduction, when patients who already suffered a cardiovascular event used it with aspirin..
