Pharmacies Receive FDA Warning

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has decided to tackle pharmacies that mass-produce unapproved copies of brand-name drugs. The first set of warnings was sent out to three large pharmacies notifying them that they were in violation of federal law for producing liquid drugs inhaled by respiratory patients who use nebulizers.

The FDA says that pharmacies that make their own version of drugs is a growing problem because they do not follow the agencies rules including safety and sterility. Pharmacies are only allowed to make drugs in a process called compounding if they have legitimate prescriptions for individual patients who require special products not made by commercial manufacturers.

Pharmacies in violation of the FDA include:

• Rotech Healthcare
• CCS Medical
• Reliant Pharmacy Services

This is a serious problem for the FDA because some patients were switched to the pharmacy -made inhalants without their knowledge by pharmacies who wanted to make a profit.
