Paxil Linked to Birth Defects

October 2005

Paxil may ease your depression, but if you are pregnant it could harm your baby. A study indicates an increase of birth defects in babies born to women who use Paxil during the first trimester.

Paxil, also known generically as Paroxetine, caused more heart defects in babies than women not taking the drug.

The Food and Drug Administration is alerting doctors, and asking them to carefully weigh the risks before prescribing the drug for pregnant women.

For more information about Paxil, visit the Dangerous and Recalled Drugs Legal Center.
