Not All Drugs Are FDA-Approved

Just because your doctor has written a prescription for a certain drug and your pharmacy carries it, doesn’t necessarily mean it has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA wants to get this message out to patients, as well as doctors and pharmacists, who may not be aware of this potentially dangerous problem.

Unapproved drugs make up almost 2% of all prescription drugs on the market, according to the FDA. These drugs can be ineffective and at worst harmful. Several hundred unapproved active ingredients, including antihistamines, narcotics and sedatives, are used in thousands of unapproved prescription products.

The FDA has linked dozens of deaths to these unapproved drugs. Due to the lack of FDA resources to get all of the drugs off the market, they are only targeting the most dangerous. Before taking a medication, ask your doctor whether it is FDA approved or not.
