Beware of Recalled Products & Drugs
January 2006
Do you own a recalled household product? Are you taking dangerous prescription drugs? How safe is the food you eat? Would you know where to look to find the answers to any of these questions? If you answered “no”, you’re not alone. But, there are resources on the web that can protect you and your loved ones from unnecessary harm.
- The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is the federal agency in charge of protecting the public against injuries and deaths as a result of defective products. The CPSC provides the public information about products that have been recalled, maybe even some that you own. The agency’s web site provides up-to-date recall announcements and unsafe product alerts. Sign up for their mailing list and be the first to know which products are dangerous.
- The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for testing of drugs, medical devices, and food to ensure their safety for the public. The FDA is also the agency that recalls food, drugs, and medical devices if they are deemed dangerous. Visit their web site for current food allergy warnings and drug recalls. The FDA also has a mailing list for current news and alerts.
The FDA and CPSC try to monitor the marketplace as best they can. But, it is also important that consumers report any unsafe products to the CPSC at 800-638-2772. If you experience any complications with food, drugs or medical devices please contact the FDA at 888-463-6332.
