Date Set for First Celebrex Trial

The first trial over Pfizer’s Celebrex is set to begin this June. The plaintiff, Rosie Ware, believes the pain reliever, Celebrex, caused her stroke in 2005.

Since Celebrex is still on the market, Ms. Ware’s attorneys may have a more difficult time proving the prescription drug caused her stroke. Vioxx and Bextra, both Cox-2 inhibitors like Celebrex, were taken off the market after serious cardiovascular events were linked to their use. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did require Celebrex to put a “black-box” warning on their label that emphasizes the drug may increase the risk of cardiovascular events.

Prior to her use of Celebrex, Ms. Ware was in good health and was taking the pain reliever for a back problem. After suffering a stroke, she was left disabled and unable to work.

Currently, the FDA feels the benefits of Celebrex still outweigh its risks.
