FDA Issues Alert for Asthma Drug Users

If you suffer from Asthma, the medications your taking could be increasing your risk of a severe asthma attack. If you use Advair Diskus, Serevent Diskus, or Foradil Aerolizer, you could unwittingly be putting yourself in danger.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has asked the drugs’ manufacturers to add new warning labels to the products. The medications are a class of drugs called long-acting beta 2-adrenergic agonists (LABA), which relax the muscles near the airways in the lungs. They are not to be used as a primary asthma therapy and should only be used as a last resort if no other medications work.

The FDA health advisory also warns that LABAs should not be used alone since they do not control asthma as well as inhaled steroids (such as Flovent) or leukotriene receptor antagonists (such as Singular). Regardless of what medications patients use, doctors urge asthma suffers to monitor their symptoms.
