More Risks with Accutane
August 2006
Nobody denies the link between the powerful acne drug Accutane and an increase in birth defects. But a recent study found the drug also raised the risk for a potential heart attack or liver problem.
Among the 13,772 patients taking Accutane:
- 44 percent developed high levels of triglycerides.
- 31 percent of healthy patients in the study developed high cholesterol.
- 11 percent developed abnormal liver tests.
Dermatologists have known the drug could increase these risks, but the new study found a higher than expected percentage of patients developing these abnormal test labs.
