More Risks with Accutane

Nobody denies the link between the powerful acne drug Accutane and an increase in birth defects. But a recent study found the drug also raised the risk for a potential heart attack or liver problem.

Among the 13,772 patients taking Accutane:

44 percent developed high levels of triglycerides.
31 percent of healthy patients in the study developed high cholesterol.
11 percent developed abnormal liver tests.

Dermatologists have known the drug could increase these risks, but the new study found a higher than expected percentage of patients developing these abnormal test labs.
