Pit Bulls Kill Boy
June 2005
Even man’s best friend can turn into the enemy. Sadly, for the youngest victims, vicious dog attacks can be more than dangerous, they can be deadly.
Such was the case when a 10-year-old San Francisco boy was killed by his family’s two pit bulls. His untimely death adds fuel to growing controversy about whether pit bulls are too dangerous to own, especially by families with young children.
The pit bulls implicated, were raised by the young victim’s family since they were puppies. The dogs attacked the boy when he was home alone. The boy, found dead by his mother, was covered in bite wounds and had a hole in his scalp from the attack.
There was no immediate explanation for what triggered the dogs’ attack. Neighbors stated that the dogs were often friendly and affectionate, allowing people to pet them on their foreheads. The female pit bull was shot dead on the scene and the male pit bull was taken into custody.
The attack is leading some observers to call for tougher laws on either pit bulls, historically bred for fighting, or dogs in general.
Each year, hundreds of people die from fatal dog bites. Pit bulls are considered a major contributor to more than half of the deadly dog attacks, making the controversial breed a primary target for restrictions and limitations.
