Canada’s Pit Bull Ban
October 2005
Ontario, Canada put the first pit bull ban into effect, but this isn’t the only attempt to outlaw the dangerous breed of dogs.
Legislators in California are also considering proposals that would make it mandatory to spay or neuter certain dog breeds including pit bulls. In Denver, officials reinstated their pit bull ban after challenges in court, and the state of Ohio declared all pit bulls dangerous dogs. While some parts of Ohio have an outright ban on the dogs, other parts just require the muzzling of pit bulls, and owners must obtain liability insurance. In Pennsylvania, “breed specific legislation” is prohibited and municipalities are not permitted to ban or impose any restriction on a specific breed.
Back in Ontario, Canada, the breeding of pit bulls is prohibited, and it is mandatory that existing pit bulls are spayed or neutered and muzzled when in public.
