Botulism Found in Earth’s Best Baby Food

Special alert for parents – Botulism, a potentially deadly bacterium, has been found in certain jars of Earth’s Best organic baby food. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Clostridium botulinum bacterium has been confirmed in the Earth’s Best Organic 2 Apple Peach Barley Wholesome Breakfast variety. Manufactured by Hain Celestial Group, the product was recalled by the company on February 9, 2007.

The specific apple peach barley variety of Earth’s Best organic baby food is sold in individual jars, 12 packs, and as part of the Earth’s Best Organic 2 Wholesome Breakfast Variety Pack. The food is distributed primarily through stores specializing in health food products, but may also be found at other food retail outlets, as well as all Babies“R”Us and Toys“R”Us locations.

The effects of botulism typically begin within 18 to 36 hours following exposure and are potentially life-threatening. Symptoms that an infant may have contracted botulism include lethargy, constipation, and other signs of growing muscle paralysis. While uncommon, symptoms may appear as soon as six hours and as late as 10 days from the time someone eats food tainted with the botulism toxin.
