Toyota Recalls Tundras

July 2006

An air bag cut-off switch meant to protect children prompted Toyota to recall 160,000 Tundras in compliance with a federal safety regulation.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration ((NHTSA) has a rule that requires a LATCH (lower anchorages and tethers for children) system to be in place in the front seat of vehicles with cut-off switches. Toyota Tundras with cut-off switches sold from model years 2003 through 2005 do not have a LATCH system in place. Toyota will spend millions to deactivate the switch in the trucks.

Since airbags cause injury and death risks to children, child seats should not be in the front seats of vehicles that do not have a cut-off switches.
