Toothpaste Tested for Contamination
May 2007
Beware – the toothpaste you use to keep your teeth fresh and clean could
be hazardous to your health. United States officials have begun an
inspection of any toothpaste shipped from China for the deadly chemical,
diethylene glycol.
Australia, the Dominican Republic, and Panama have reported tainted toothpaste imported from China containing high levels of diethylene glycol, which is used in engine coolants. A test in Panama confirmed the lethal chemical in a sample of toothpaste pulled directly from store shelves.
China is the number two exporter of toothpaste to America, behind Canada. Currently, it is unknown which U.S. brands of toothpaste are Chinese exports.
