Over One Million Stork Cribs Recalled

January 2009

Stork recalls over one million cribs. The second major crib recall in less than a week has been announced. Stork Craft Manufacturing is recalling over one million of their cribs because they pose a suffocation threat to children.

The cribs affected by the recall were sold at major retailers like J.C. Penney, Kmart, and Wal-Mart between May 2000 and January 2009. About 535,000 units are being recalled in the United States and about 494,000 have been recalled in Canada.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the metal brackets used to support the crib mattress and mattress board can break. When this happens, the mattress may collapse, creating a dangerous gap between the mattress and crib rails. A child can become trapped in this gap and suffocate. So far, ten incidents have been reported in which one or more support brackets have broken on a defective crib.
