Contact Lens Solutions Associated with Risks for Years

July 2006

The Fusarium outbreak may have come as a surprise to Bausch and Lomb, but many researchers say they have known for years that multipurpose contact lens solutions posed certain health risks.

When the multipurpose solutions were introduced back in the 80’s, they were marketed as a convenient way of cleaning your lenses. But, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval process did not take into effect consumer usage behaviors that impact the effect of a multipurpose solution. Studies show corneal staining caused from the multipurpose solutions. Corneal staining causes a tear in the cornea making it more prone to an infection.

Many multi-purpose companies are revamping the internal tests they perform on contacts. The FDA is also in the process of revising their guidelines to be more practical with how contacts are actually used.

Most of the confirmed 125 cases of Fusarium keratitis infections in the US were associated with ReNu with MoistureLoc. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said there is no linkage to another type of solution at this time.
