Link Between ReNu and Eye Infections Confirmed
August 2006
Experts have confirmed that ReNu with MoistureLoc was the only contact lens solution responsible for the outbreak of a dangerous fungal eye infection. Contact lens solution maker Bausch & Lomb removed their Renu with MoistureLoc solution from the shelves in June 2006 after numerous reports of Fusarium Keratitus, a potentially blinding eye fungus. While federal experts and leading eye doctors confirmed the link between the contact lens solution and the eye fungus outbreak, it is still undetermined how the lens solution caused the problems.
From June 2005 until the end of June 2006 there were 164 confirmed cases of Fusarium Keratitus in the United States attributed to ReNu with MoistureLoc. Over one-third of the cases required the patients to have corneal transplants in either one or both eyes.
