Popular Toys Pose Health Risks
June 2007
A special alert for parents – two large recalls of popular toys have
been initiated by manufacturers. Magnetic toys often used as building
blocks and miniature accessories have been recalled for a severe risk of
intestinal damage if ingested. Another serious recall has been issued
for Thomas the Tank Engine toy trains because certain items pose the
risk of lead poisoning.
Small magnetic toys have claimed the life of one child and injured 100 others worldwide. Commonly sold under brands such as Magnetix, Polly Pocket, and more, these toys include miniature magnets that may be easily ingested by small children. If swallowed, the magnets may lock together and cause serious blockage of the intestines, requiring surgery for many children. Over 10 million units of magnetic toys have been recalled since 2006.
Collectable toy trains sold as Thomas & Friends have been recalled for their paint, which may contain lead. The red and yellow paint used to decorate over 1.5 million Thomas the Tank Engine toys has been identified as the source. Lead is known to cause long-term learning and behavior problems if ingested by children.
