Pennsylvania Child Hurt by Dangerous Crib

June 2008

Defective cribs recalled Your child's crib may not provide a good night's sleep. More than 300,000 Jardine cribs sold by Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us stores have been recalled, and one Pennsylvania mother witnessed the hazards of the cribs firsthand.

The wooden slats and spindles on the defective crib frames can break, causing a gap in which children can get trapped. Earlier this year, Janine Nieman of East Stroudsburg, PA found her crying son outside of his crib with his head stuck inside. While Janine and her husband were able to dislodge their son and slide him back into the crib, the child was scared and shaken.

There have been four reports of children becoming similarly trapped in the recalled furniture, and two of the children suffered cuts and bruises. In all, 42 instances of broken slats and spindles have been reported by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
