Contact Lens Solution Recall
May 2007
Advanced Medical Optics has announced a recall of Complete MoisturePLUS
Multipurpose Solution, a product used for cleaning and storing soft
contact lenses. The solution has been linked to Acanthamoeba keratitis
(AK), an infection that causes deteriorating vision. Some sufferers
require a corneal transplant, while other AK sufferers may even go blind.
A recent spike in AK infections across multiple states, including Pennsylvania, prompted an ongoing investigation led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The investigation discovered a connection between Complete MoisturePLUS Multipurpose Solution and the parasite that causes the AK condition.
AK typically occurs in about one of every 500,000 contact lens users per year in America. But the CDC findings show that users of the Complete MoisturePLUS solution were seven times as likely to contract AK as those that used a different product.
