Magnet Toys Pose Fatal Risk
March 2008
More toys have been recalled in response to the risk that they pose to
children’s safety. Mega Brands America has recalled approximately 2.4
million of its Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. toys and MagnaMan figures.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said that magnets can detach from the toys and then be swallowed or inhaled by young children. In the event that more than one magnet is swallowed, they can attract each other and cause potentially fatal intestinal perforations or blockages. A complete list of affected products is available on the CPSC’s website.
The CPSC has received 19 reports of magnets coming loose from building toys, and the figures were responsible for another 25 incidents. The toys were sold at Wal-Mart, Target, Toys R Us, K-Mart and other toy stores nationwide from January 2005 through December 2007.
