Recalled Sony Battery Emits Sparks
October 2006
Recalled Sony batteries are even more dangerous than initially thought. A Fujitsu laptop computer using a recalled Sony battery overheated and started sparking, a Fujitsu spokesperson announced.
The laptop battery, already part of a global recall of Sony batteries, started giving off sparks when a Fujitsu worker was retrieving the laptop battery from a consumer’s home. Fujitsu recalled more than 280,000 Sony laptop batteries because the batteries were prone to overheat and burst into flames.
Officials are blaming the defective Sony laptop batteries on microscopic metal particles left inside the battery, which can cause them to short circuit.
