Top Hidden Household Dangers
August 2007
The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has released
their list of the most common dangers potentially lurking in your
household. The “Top Five Hidden Home Hazards” may be found in any
residence, and contribute to part of the 33.1 million people injured by
consumer products in the home every year.
Magnets topped the list of hazards, with eight million magnetic toys recalled. These magnets can be extremely dangerous if swallowed, especially when combined with another magnet or piece of metal. This hazard could cause serious intestinal damage that requires surgery, or worse, death.
Recalled products captured their own category as the second greatest danger. Tip-overs of furniture and large items took the third spot, while windows and window coverings followed. The fifth most hazardous distinction went to pool and spa drains, which are often so strong that they can injure children with their suction power.
