General Electric Microwave Oven Recall
December 2007
General Electric (GE) has announced a major recall of 92,000 built-in
microwave oven combination wall units that could literally send your
kitchen up in smoke. Along with the recall notice, GE has disclosed at
least 35 reports of fire and property damage due to defective microwaves.
The microwave half of the built-in combo can overheat. This may ignite plastic pieces inside the control area. If this happens, a fire may result from the increased internal temperature and flaming plastic components.
Recalled microwave ovens were sold as GE, GE Profile, and Kenmore brand products. They were sold from January 2000 to December 2003 at stores nationwide. The thermal oven occupying the bottom half of the combo wall unit does not pose a risk and is still safe to use.
