Defect in Ford SUVs and Pickups May Spark Fires

June 2005

Ford SUV or truck drivers, listen up!

The cruise-control switch that sparked a federal investigation into 3.7 million Ford pickups and SUVs prone to engine fires is also found on 6 million additional Ford vehicles.

Currently, no fires have been definitively linked to the cruise-control switch in the seven additional models. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is examining reports of fires in those vehicles and could expand its investigation.

The NHTSA has an ongoing investigation into at least 218 reports of fires in Ford model SUVs and trucks. Each of the fires broke out while the vehicles were parked. No injuries have been reported but homes, garages and sheds have caught fire from the vehicles on fire.

The additional Ford vehicles with the suspect switch include:

  • 1997-2002 Explorers
  • 2001-2002 Escape
  • 1997-2002 Mercury Mountaineer
  • 1997-2002 Ranger
  • 1997-2002 Econoline
  • 1997-2002 Windstar
  • 1997-2002 Explorer Sport Trac

The Ford vehicles under investigation since March 2005 include:

  • 1995-1999 F150
  • 2001-2002 F150
  • 1997-1999 Expedition
  • 1997-1999 Navigators
  • 2001-2002 Expedition
  • 2001-2002 Navigator

Additionally, Ford recalled 2000 model-year F-150s, Expeditions and Navigators in January 2005.

If you have one of these vehicles and have not received a recall notice, contact Ford Motor Co. at 1-800-392-3673.
