Eyelash Enhancer Pulled from Market
January 2008
If you’ve been using Jan Marini’s Age Intervention Eyelash Conditioner,
you’re going to have to switch back to false eyelashes or regular
mascara. Jan Marini Skin Research has pulled their product from the U.S.
market due to a conflict with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The agency is currently struggling to decide whether the conditioner
should be regulated as a drug rather than a cosmetic.
Age Intervention Eyelash Conditioner is a controversial item that lengthens eyelashes with drug-like effects, prompting the label “cosmeceutical.” If ruled a drug by the FDA, it would be subject to a different set of safety regulations and cautionary labeling. Currently, it is unclear if there are any negative effects associated with the use of Jan Marini’s eyelash conditioner.
The FDA seized thousands of tubes of a similar Jan Marini product in November 2007, claiming it contained a misbranded drug. The current Age Intervention Eyelash Conditioner being pulled from the market is a reformulated version of the earlier cosmetic product that was seized. Jan Marini also faces legal action from the drug maker of Lumigan, a prescription glaucoma drug that elongates eyelashes as a side effect.
