More Infections Tied to Bausch & Lomb Contact Lens Cleaner
May 2006
The potentially blinding fungal infection associated with Bausch & Lomb’s Renu contact lens cleaners has increased dramatically, according to a confirmation by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The bad news for Bausch & Lomb is the infections are now being tied to two of their cleaners, Renu MoistureLoc and Renu MultiPlus.
The Fusarium fungus causes severe inflammation of the cornea. The number of confirmed cases of infection is up to 106, but the number linked to the Renu products has climbed from 54 to 87 cases. Of the confirmed cases, 63% reportedly involve Renu with MoistureLoc. But that’s not all for Renu, their MultiPlus cleaner is linked to 19 cases.
The CDC also confirmed cases of infections involving lens users who use products from Advanced Medical Optics and Alcon, a unit of Nestle. Advanced Medical Optics is associated with three cases, and Alcom is currently linked to four.
Bausch & Lomb continues to market its older Renu products not linked to the contamination.
