GE Recalls 2.5M Dishwashers for Fire Hazard
May 2007
If you own a General Electric (GE) dishwasher, cleaning your dishes
might make your home go up in smoke. General Electric (GE) has recalled
2.5 million dishwashers due to a fire hazard from faulty wiring.
The machines could short circuit, or even worse, spark into flames, when liquid rinse aid comes in contact with internal wires. The recall follows 12 reported fires and over 200 cases of overheating related to the defect.
The GE dishwashers in question were produced from 1997 through 2001. The problem is due in part to the erosion of wiring, which is why the models affected by the fire hazard date back six to ten years.
