Dell Announces Major Battery Recall

August 2006

Dell announced the largest safety recall in the history of the consumer electronics industry with a recall of 4.1 million notebook computer batteries. The recall comes in response to reports of the notebooks bursting into flames.

Sony lithium-ion batteries installed in the notebooks were responsible for the explosions. For years, lithium-ion batteries have been known to catch fire, and have been the focus of past recalls. But recently they have been the subject of interest for fires involving notebook computers on planes. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says lithium-ion batteries don’t affect only Dell since Sony sold them to other major computer makers.

The recalled batteries were used in 2.7 million Dell computers sold in the U.S. and 1.4 million sold overseas from April 2004 to July 2006. Dell will notify consumers by mail or online, and through corporate sales representatives. Arrangements for a replacement battery should be made. Until the battery is replaced, owners should remove the original battery and use a power cord.
