Contact Solution May Cause Eye Infections
April 2006
The increase in a rare, but severe, fungal eye infection may be caused by a popular contact solution brand, Bausch & Lomb. In less than one year, 109 patients in 17 states have been infected.
Officials have only investigated 30 of these cases, but of those 30, 26 patients used Bausch & Lomb’s Renu with MoistureLoc contact solution. Also, in February Bausch & Lomb stopped shipment of Renu with MoistureLoc after a similar outbreak took place in Hong Kong and Singapore. At that time, they were unaware of the cases in the United States.
Signs of the fungus in soft contact lens wearers include redness, pain, tearing, discharge, and an increased sensitivity to light or blurred vision. Contact lens wearers who experience these symptoms are urged to see their eye doctor.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently conducting an inspection of the Bausch & Lomb plant in SC. Wal-Mart has pulled the solution from shelves, but stores have not been told to remove the lens cleaner yet.
