Apple Joins Laptop Battery Recall
August 2006
On the heels of last week’s Dell recall announcement, Apple Computer has issued a recall of 1.8 million Sony batteries used in some of their laptops due to explosion and fire hazard. The recall is smaller than Dell’s, but the percentage of Apple’s affected customers is greater than the Dell recall.
The Apple recall includes batteries from some of their iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 laptops. These computers represent a third of the laptops sold between October 2003 and the present. The decision to announce a recall came after the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received nine reports of batteries overheating, including two that resulted in burns and others involving property damage. Sony does not anticipate any more recalls associated with its lithium-ion batteries, and has worked to correct the problem.
Owners of the recalled Apple laptops should remove the battery and use the AC adapter to power computer until a replacement battery is sent.
