Evenflo Car Seat Investigated After 2 Infant Deaths

March 2004

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating Evenflo Discovery infant seats after 2 babies were killed when their infant car seats came apart in accidents.  The investigation may lead to a recall which could involve over 2.5 million Discovery infant seats.

The NHTSA has said it has received 7 reports of the Discovery infant seat coming detached from its base during accidents.  Two of these incidents resulted in the deaths of the babies and three resulted in injuries.  Referring to the two fatal accidents, a spokesperson for Evenflo said the accidents were "pretty horrific, unsurvivable crashes."

The NHTSA is expected to work with Evenflo during the next few weeks to determine if a recall is necessary.
