Works Zone Hazards
2003
The number of drivers and vehicles on the road this summer is expected
to keep growing. Unfortunately, as these drivers hit the road,
approximately 20% of the National Highway System will be under
construction. This combination of traffic and work zones means more than
just delays and frustration. It means the conditions are prime for
construction zone accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration, more than 80% of fatalities that occur in a work
zone are drivers and passengers.
The number of fatalities in road
construction zones has been increasing at an alarming pace. In fact, the
pace is even higher when taken in percentage to that of overall highway
fatalities.
It is important the drivers take precautions in road construction zones not only for the safety of construction workers and other drivers, but for their safety and that of their passengers.
