Pennsylvania's Work Zone Law

August 2003

In 2003, Pennsylvania established new laws for driving in constructions zones. These laws were created to reduce the number of accidents, injuries, and fatalities that occur in work zones.  Surprisingly, the majority of construction zone fatalities are drivers and passengers, not construction workers.

The new work zone law requires:

  • use of headlights when prompted for better visibility

  • the suspension of driver's license for 15 days if caught exceeding the work zone speed limit by 11 mph+

  • an additional 5 years of jail time if a driver is convicted of vehicular homicide involving reckless or drunk driving in a work zone.
