790,000 Volkswagens Recalled
February 2007
Attention drivers – Harsh weather and poor conditions aren’t the only dangers on the roadway. Due to a faulty brake light switch, Volkswagen of America Inc. has issued a recall of nearly 800,000 automobiles. The malfunction could cause the brake light to either remain on or not function, leading to potentially dangerous car crashes caused by improper signaling.
The current recall extends to a variety of Volkswagen models:
| Model | Model Year |
|---|---|
| Golf | 1999-2006 |
| GTI | 1999-2006 |
| Jetta | 2001-2005 |
| New Beetle | 2001-2007 |
| RC2 | 2004 |
This current notice expands upon a 2006 recall for 1999-2002 model year Jettas and 1998-2002 model year New Beetles for the same brake light issue. If your vehicle was already repaired from the 2006 notice, there is no need to respond to the present recall.
In addition to faulty brake signaling, the malfunction could mean certain Volkswagens need to be towed if the bad brake light works in tandem with the shift interlock. If you own a Volkswagen model impacted by the recall, contact your local dealership to install a new brake light switch.
