Heavy Trucks to Get Speed-Limiting Devices
October 2006
U.S. trucking-industry leaders have decided to equip all new heavy trucks with speed-control devices preventing them from going above 68 miles per hour (mph). The decision was made after highway deaths have been rising since 2000.
Many larger trucks already use speed-control devices to improve safety and control fuel consumption, but these are easily disabled. The newly installed speed-control devices would be tamper-proof. All trucks weighing 26,000 pounds or more would be equipped with a microchip that would control the truck’s speed. Safety groups are also lobbying for installment of the new speed-controls on older trucks.
The American Trucking Association estimates that this proposal won’t become federal law for at least two years.
