Toyota Developing Alcohol Detection Systems
January 2007
Hoping to reduce drunk driving accidents, Toyota Motor Corp. is developing an alcohol detection system for their vehicles. The fail-safe system would automatically shut the car down if sensors pick up signs of drunkenness.
Vehicles with the detection system will not start if sweat sensors in the steering wheel detects high levels of alcohol. The system would also take over if the sensors detect abnormal steering, or if the driver’s pupils are not in focus.
Toyota hopes to have the system in place by the end of 2009. Nissan Motor Corp. is also working on a breathalyzer-like device for their vehicles.
