Stability Control Systems Reduce Auto Fatalities
June 2006
Automakers are being urged by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to speed up the installation of stability control systems after a new research showed the safety feature could save 10,000 lives annually.
Stability control uses brakes and engine power to keep cars from going out of control. The equipment comes standard on 40% of 2006 models and optional on another 15% of vehicles.
Research shows:
- Stability control would reduce the risk of fatal single-vehicle crashes by 56%.
- Overall risk of single-vehicle crashes would be reduced by 40%.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has until October to propose a rule that would require and set standards for stability control systems. Automakers claim that even without a rule they are speeding up installation.
