Stability-Control Systems Save Lives
September 2006
The biggest advancement in safety devices since the seat belt may soon be required on vehicles. Stability-control systems help to reduce the risk of rollovers and crashes, and federal officials are expected to require all vehicles to be equipped with one.
Stability-control systems activate when a vehicle is not going in the direction that a driver intends. The system helps the driver regain control.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) states:
- More than 10,000 lives can be saved each year once the systems are on all vehicles.
- Fatal single-vehicle accidents would be reduced by 56%.
- Overall risk of single-vehicle crashes would be reduced by 40%.
Congress has ordered the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to require the stability-control feature. A decision on the stability-control systems should be issued early next year, but it would be at least three years before the systems will be a feature on all new vehicles.
