Stability Control Soon to be Standard
September 2006
Stability control systems may be in place two years earlier than expected. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that by 2012 all vehicles will be built with the new technology, but most manufacturers say that their vehicle models will have the feature by 2010.
Stability control, also known as vehicle skid control or AdvanceTrac, will make it possible to prevent a crash, according to the NHTSA.
Benefits of the stability control feature include:
- 5,300 to 10,300 lives per year saved in car accidents
- 252,000 injuries could be prevented
- 85% of SUV rollovers prevented
- 60% of SUV crashes prevented
- One-third reduction in single car crashes
The NHTSA estimates that the feature will cost about $100 per vehicle to install.
