Firestone Warning: Recalled Tires May Still Be On SUVs

August 2006

Six years after Firestone recalled 6.5 million tires linked to hundreds of injuries and deaths, recalled tires are still on the road. Now Firestone is trying to notify customers included in their original 2000-2001 recall that tens of thousands of these tires may still be in use.

The decision for the renewed efforts to notify customers came after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted a generic test that involved looking in Washington-area parking lots for the recalled tired. Out of 50 Ford Explorers identified, four or five had the recalled tires as spares. In addition, recently there have been five serious accidents linked to the recalled tires. This includes a May crash that killed an 11-year-old boy in California.

The 2000-2001 recalls included about 4 million Ford Explorers built between 1991 and 2001. Some of the recalled tires were also used on other Ford and Mercury vehicles. Of the 6.5 million tires recalled, Firestone states that it has recovered more than 6.3 million.
