Pennsylvania Drivers: Call 511 for Traffic Conditions

March 2009

PA drivers will be able to get traffic updates. Beginning this summer, Pennsylvania drivers will be able to dial 511 to get free statewide travel information. Travel delays, road and weather conditions, and tourism information will all be available via the Internet and phone.

Almost 300 million miles are traveled on Pennsylvania roads each year, and PennDOT hopes that the 511 Pennsylvania program will increase road safety, decrease car accidents, and help avoid travel delays. In addition to dialing 511 to get information, users can also register to get proactive travel alerts that will be distributed through text and voice messages.

The Federal Communications Commission has designated 511 as the national three-digit telephone number for traveler information. At present, thirty-three states have 511 services. Until the program launches in PA, travelers can access information at www.state.pa.us.
