PA Drivers Reminded of "Steer Clear" Law
December 2009
Police officers are reminding Pennsylvania drivers about a state law
that took effect in September. According to the law, motorists are
required to move over or slow down when they approach police or
emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road.
Some state police have said that drivers aren't obeying the "Steer Clear" law. The law applies any time an emergency vehicle displays flashing lights and when road crews or emergency workers have lighted flares, posted signs, or tried to warn motorists. Those who do not obey the law can be fined up to $250. If an injury results, drivers can also have their license suspended for 90 days.
Police have released a video of a state trooper in Philadelphia who was hit by a vehicle's mirror as he conducted a traffic stop. Officers say they hope people will see the video and be reminded of the "Steer Clear" law. They also said they will be ticketing motorists who don't obey the law.
