New Year's Day is Dangerous for Pedestrians
December 2008
Research done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has
revealed that New Year's Day is a dangerous time to be on the road.
However, some may be surprised to find that the danger is the greatest
for pedestrians,
not drivers.
Analysis of the research showed that New Year's Day is the deadliest day of the year for pedestrians, with 410 people killed on January 1 from 1986 to 2002. Half of the deaths involved alcohol impairment, and 58 percent of the pedestrians killed were intoxicated.
The research found that holidays are dangerous times in general. Halloween is the second-deadliest day for pedestrians with 401 people killed from 1986 to 2002. The most fatalities from accidents occur on the Fourth of July, with an average of 161 deaths each year. Not far behind is July 3 with 149, December 23 with 145, and New Year’s Day with 142.
