Imported Cars Voted the Safest
November 2006
A new safety feature was the difference between making the safest vehicle list or not. All of the cars who made the U.S. Insurance Industry’s 13 spots were imported vehicles; and all had the electronic stability control feature.
The list of the 2007 winners includes:
- Audi A-4
- Saab 9-3
- Subaru Legacy
- Hyundai Entourage
- Kia Sedona
- Mercedes M-class
- Volvo XC90
- Acura RDX
- Honda Pilot
- Subaru B9 Tribeca
- Honda CR-V
- Subaru Forester
All 13 vehicles protected people in front, side, and rear crash tests based on insurance institute testing throughout the year.
The electronic stability control systems were the deciding factor. This safety device applies brakes to individual wheels to avoid a rollover when it senses a driver is losing control. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety claims studies show up to 10,000 fatal crashes a year could be prevented with the new technology. The feature will be outfitted on all vehicle models by 2012.
