Hit-and-Run Accidents on the Rise
October 2006
The number of pedestrians killed by hit-and-run accidents is at a ten year high. The death toll has risen 20% since 2000.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 4,881 pedestrians were killed, 974 of those fatalities were from hit-and-run accidents. The total number of pedestrian deaths nationwide rose 2% since 2000, but hit-and-runs rose nearly 10 times that pace. More cars on the road coupled with distracted and aggressive drivers are considered causes of the increase.
The number of hit-and-runs deaths peaked in 1996 when a record-high 982 people were killed.
