Pennsylvania Considers Hands-Free Cell Phone Law

June 2006

Would you use your cell phone while driving if it cost $250? That might be the price you’ll pay if Pennsylvania lawmakers, hoping to make roads safer, pass a law preventing drivers from holding cell phones.

In 2004, handheld cell phones caused more than 1,170 crashes in Pennsylvania. Research shows that cell phone use while driving impairs the ability to brake quickly and maintain a constant speed. A study done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that 10% of drivers talk on some type of phone.

Under the proposed law, a driver would be fined $250 if they are caught holding a cell phone while operating a vehicle. New York was the first state to pass the hands-free law back in 2001 and Connecticut, Washington, D.C. and New Jersey followed. Just last week, Chicago joined the pack, with a city-wide restriction.
